Most Artarmon blockages are roots. The Federation and interwar streets are still on clay pipe laid in short lengths, and every joint is a way in for a root from a street tree or a neighbour's garden.
We jet the line first, then put the camera down it so you can see what was in there and what shape the pipe is in. If the pipe is sound, jetting is the whole job. If a joint has failed, you will see that on the screen before anyone talks about digging.

The problem
A homeowner in Artarmon had drains running slow and a smell she could not get rid of. She had tried the supermarket products and had the line cleared before, and it kept coming back within a few months.
What we did
We put the camera down the line before touching anything. It was roots through the joints of the original clay pipe, which is what sits under most of the older streets here. We cleared it, showed her the footage, and priced two options. She went with relining the affected section rather than digging up the front garden.
The result

About the suburb
Plumbing in Artarmon
Artarmon, postcode 2064, sits between St Leonards and Chatswood with the Pacific Highway and the railway running through the middle of it. On the eastern side it's Federation and interwar houses on quiet streets around Artarmon Reserve and the shops on Hampden Road. On the Lane Cove side of the highway it's the industrial area, with warehouses, workshops, showrooms and a growing number of new apartment buildings along Reserve Road and Herbert Street.
The houses on the eastern side are old enough that the original plumbing is now the problem. Earthenware sewer lines with roots in the joints, galvanised water services that have narrowed inside, and stormwater that was never properly connected. A drain that blocks every few months in Artarmon is nearly always roots from the street trees and the old gardens. We clear it, put the camera down to find where they're getting in, and reline the pipe so they stay out.
The industrial area is a different kind of work. Warehouses and workshops have trade waste, grease traps, backflow devices that need annual testing, and hot water and amenities that get hard use. A blocked drain in a workshop stops the whole shift, so those jobs get planned around the business, not around us. We do the annual backflow testing and the maintenance as well as the call-outs.
The new apartment buildings along the highway and in the industrial area share their sewer stacks, stormwater and hot water between dozens of units. That's strata work, and we do it with the building manager in the loop. Artarmon slopes towards Flat Rock Creek on one side and the Lane Cove River on the other, and a heavy storm finds every gutter that's been left too long. Roof plumbing, box gutters and downpipes on the older houses are part of what we do, and it's cheaper to replace a gutter than to fix a ceiling.

Why does my Artarmon drain keep blocking?
Nearly always roots. The older streets are on clay pipe with a joint every metre or so, and a root only needs a hairline gap. Clearing it gets the water moving again, but until the joint is repaired or relined the roots come back. The camera tells you which one you are dealing with.
