Lower North Shore

Plumber in Chatswood

Blocked drains, sewer repairs, hot water and strata work across Chatswood, from the heritage streets to the apartment towers and shops around the station.

What we get called out to in Chatswood

  • Apartment buildings. Stacks, risers, hot water plant and common drains, with reports a strata manager can act on.
  • Heritage houses on original sewer. Federation and interwar homes where the clay line is as old as the house.
  • Big trees and big gardens. Roots through pipe joints, found on camera rather than guessed at.
  • Shops and offices. Commercial repairs booked so they do not shut the business down.
  • Hot water and gas. Systems repaired or replaced, and gas appliances installed by licenced gas fitters.

Chatswood is a short run from our part of the Lower North Shore, and a normal day's work for us.

What we do here

In more detail

The three we get called about most

Strata and apartments

A good share of our Chatswood work is buildings rather than houses. Stacks, risers, common drains and hot water plant, in towers and in the older walk-ups behind the shops.

Every job comes back with photos and a written finding a building manager or a committee can act on, and a price that does not move once it is agreed. We deal with residents directly if that makes the day easier for you.

Strata plumbing

Blocked drains

In the heritage streets it is roots in the original clay line. In the units it is usually grease and rubbish building up in a shared stack until one flat copes the backup.

Either way we jet it, camera it and tell you what actually caused it, so the same line does not block again in six months. You get the footage, not just our word for it.

Blocked drains

Hot water and gas

Storage tanks, continuous flow and heat pumps, repaired or replaced. In a unit the job is as much about getting the old unit out and the new one in as it is about the plumbing.

Gas work is done by our own licenced gas fitters, whether that is a new cooktop, a leak you can smell, or a compliance certificate the building needs.

Hot water

It’s an emergency! I’d better ring STS.

How we work with you

What happens from the first phone call

  1. You get in touch

Ring the office, send the form or email us. For anything urgent, ring — we will tell you what it usually means and what to do while we are on the way, like where your water meter is.

  2. We come and look

For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it properly first, and there is no charge for that visit. Guessing at a price over the phone helps nobody.

  3. You get the price in writing

The job priced, not an hourly rate ticking over. If there is more than one sensible way to do it, you get both options and the difference between them explained.

  4. We do the work

Our own licenced plumbers, on the day we said. Drop sheets down, the mess taken away, and a phone call rather than silence if we are running behind.

  5. You see what we found

Photos, camera footage where we used it, and a plain explanation of what was actually wrong. If something is not right afterwards, ring us and we come back and put it right at our cost.

A job we did here

A Chatswood main drain that would not stay clear

The problem

A Chatswood homeowner had frequent blockages in the main drain, slow water in the kitchen and laundry, and a smell that came back every time. Several temporary fixes had already been tried.

What we did

We ran the camera through the line first and found roots and a build-up of grease narrowing the pipe. High pressure jetting cleared it properly rather than just punching a hole through it, and it was done without digging up the garden.

The result

The drains were running freely the same day and the smell went with the blockage. We went back through the footage with them and showed them what was feeding the problem, so they knew what to watch for.

Not a claim, a count

The work we have actually done in Chatswood

Our job records run from 2016. Since then we have completed 154 jobs in Chatswood.

That is the figure out of our job management system, not a number we made up for the website. It is also why we can usually tell you on the phone what a problem probably is before anyone gets in a ute.

We are at your service, est. 2007

The most common of them

  • 78 taps, toilets and everyday repairs
  • 30 blocked drains cleared
  • 30 sewer and stormwater repairs
  • 19 roofing and guttering
  • 9 hot water repairs and replacements

Plenty of jobs cover more than one of these, so the numbers overlap rather than add up.

About the suburb

Plumbing in Chatswood

Chatswood, postcode 2067, is the biggest centre on the North Shore. Around the station it's apartment towers, office buildings, Westfield, Chatswood Chase and the shops and restaurants along Victoria Avenue. Walk a few streets out in any direction and it's Federation and interwar houses on leafy streets like Centennial Avenue and Fullers Road, with 1960s and 70s unit blocks in between.

The towers are strata work. A sewer stack, a stormwater line or a hot water plant serves dozens of apartments, and when it fails it fails for all of them at once. Building managers here need more than someone who turns up. They need the camera footage, photos and a written finding they can put to a committee, and pressure problems on the upper floors need to be measured, not guessed at. That's how we do it.

The houses in Chatswood West and towards Willoughby and Artarmon have the plumbing of their age. Earthenware sewers with roots in the joints, galvanised water services that have rusted inside, and stormwater that was never properly connected. A drain that blocks every few months is roots, and clearing it only buys time. We camera it, jet it, and reline it where the pipe is sound enough, which fixes it without digging up the garden.

There's a lot of commercial plumbing in Chatswood. Restaurants and food courts with grease traps, office towers with bathrooms that serve hundreds of people a day, medical suites, gyms and shops. Those jobs are about getting in, doing the work cleanly and getting out without stopping anyone's trade, and we plan them that way. We do the annual backflow testing as well as the call-outs.

Chatswood is hilly, and the older streets off Fullers Road and Centennial Avenue have long sewer runs downhill across easements. Stormwater off a big roof in a summer storm finds any gutter or downpipe that's been left too long. Roof plumbing is part of what we do, and a new box gutter is cheaper than a new ceiling.

Chatswood is a short run up the highway from Lane Cove, where STS has been based since 2016, and a normal day's work for us. Ring us for anything urgent, or ask us to come and look at a bigger job. There's no charge for the site visit.

Questions we get asked in Chatswood

It depends on the job, which is why we price the job rather than run an hourly rate. For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it first, at no charge, and you get the price in writing before we start.

Yes. A good share of our work is strata and commercial across the North Shore, and it comes with photos and a written finding a building manager or committee can act on.

Yes, a lot of it. Stacks, common drains, hot water plant and leaks between units. You get photos, a written finding and a fixed price, which is what a committee needs before it can approve anything.
