What we do here

In more detail

The three we get called about most

Post-war sewer lines

North Ryde was largely built in one go, which means a lot of houses are on clay sewer of exactly the same age, laid the same way, now failing at the same joints.

We camera the line before quoting anything. On a line this age it is worth knowing the condition of the whole run rather than just the spot that blocked.

Blocked drains

Hot water

Tanks well past their life, and a lot of them tucked into a spot that made sense in 1965 and does not now.

We repair where it makes sense and replace where it does not, and we say which one plainly. Gas, electric and heat pump, sized for the house, with the old unit taken away.

Hot water

Bathrooms

Original bathrooms brought up to date, in houses and in townhouses. The plumbing behind them is usually the same age as the tiles.

We run the plumbing side start to finish, with waterproofing done properly and certified. Better to find the old pipework at rough-in than after the room is finished.

Bathroom renovations

It’s an emergency! I’d better ring STS.

Old fashioned service. Modern day plumbing.

How we work with you

What happens from the first phone call

  1. You get in touch

Ring the office, send the form or email us. For anything urgent, ring — we will tell you what it usually means and what to do while we are on the way, like where your water meter is.

  2. We come and look

For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it properly first, and there is no charge for that visit. Guessing at a price over the phone helps nobody.

  3. You get the price in writing

The job priced, not an hourly rate ticking over. If there is more than one sensible way to do it, you get both options and the difference between them explained.

  4. We do the work

Our own licenced plumbers, on the day we said. Drop sheets down, the mess taken away, and a phone call rather than silence if we are running behind.

  5. You see what we found

Photos, camera footage where we used it, and a plain explanation of what was actually wrong. If something is not right afterwards, ring us and we come back and put it right at our cost.

A job we did here

A burst pipe in a North Ryde kitchen

A burst water pipe uncovered for repair

The problem

A North Ryde homeowner had a pipe let go in the kitchen and water coming out faster than they could deal with it. The immediate worry was the flooring and the cabinetry.

What we did

We isolated the water first so nothing more went into the house, then located the burst and assessed why it had gone. The damaged section was replaced with new pipe and the line was pressure tested. We checked the rest of the pipework in the area, because a pipe that fails from age rarely does it once.

The result

The repair was done in one visit and the house was dry the same day. They also know which other runs are the same vintage, so the next one is a planned job rather than another emergency.

About the suburb

Plumbing in North Ryde

North Ryde, postcode 2113, sits between the Lane Cove River and Macquarie Park, with Lane Cove Road and Epping Road running through it and the shops at Coxs Road in the middle. It's mostly brick houses from the 1950s and 60s on good-sized blocks along streets like Blenheim Road, Cutler Parade and Coxs Road, with newer townhouses and apartments going in around the station and towards Macquarie Park.

Houses of that age are coming due for their first big plumbing work. The sewers are earthenware with roots in the joints, the water services are early copper or galvanised, and the hot water system has been replaced once already and is due again. With big trees in the gardens and along the streets, a blocked drain in North Ryde is nearly always roots. We clear it, camera it to find where they're getting in, and reline it so they stay out.

Galvanised and early copper water services show up as poor pressure, a shower that goes cold when a tap is turned on elsewhere, and green or brown stains at the taps. We replace the service from the meter in new copper, and we check the main stop tap, which in these houses is often seized.

A lot of North Ryde houses have been extended, had a second bathroom added, or had a granny flat put in the back yard. Where those drains were tied in badly twenty years ago is usually where the trouble is now. We find those joins with the camera and fix them properly, and we do the plumbing for a new extension or flat from the ground up.

The newer townhouses and apartment buildings share their sewer stacks, stormwater and hot water between all the units, and a fault in one place affects everyone. That's strata work, and we do it with the strata manager in the loop, with camera footage and a written finding the committee can act on. The shops at Coxs Road and the businesses along Lane Cove Road ring us for a blocked drain at opening time or a hot water unit that's given up, and we plan those jobs around the business.

North Ryde is a short run from Lane Cove, where STS has been based since 2016, straight across the river on Epping Road. Ring us for anything urgent, or ask us to come and look at a bigger job. There's no charge for the site visit.

Questions we get asked in North Ryde

What does a plumber in North Ryde cost?

It depends on the job, which is why we price the job rather than run an hourly rate. For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it first, at no charge, and you get the price in writing before we start.

Are your plumbers licenced and insured?

Yes. STS Plumbing Co Pty Ltd holds NSW licence 227192C and carries insurance, and the blokes who turn up are our own team, not subcontracted labour.

How quickly can you get here?

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and we call back within 24 hours, guaranteed. For anything urgent, ring rather than fill in the form and we will tell you what it usually means and when we can be there.

Do you work on units and commercial buildings?

Yes. A good share of our work is strata and commercial across the North Shore, and it comes with photos and a written finding a building manager or committee can act on.

A pipe has burst. What should I do before you get here?

Turn the water off at the meter, which is usually at the front boundary, and turn the hot water unit off if the burst is on a hot line. Then ring us. Getting the water off in the first minute is worth more than anything else you can do, and it stops the damage while you wait.

Do you warrant your work?

Yes. If something is not right after we have left, ring us and we will come back and put it right at our cost. That is part of the STS Guarantee above.
