What we get called out to in Hunters Hill
- Old sewer lines under old houses. Earthenware and clay that has been in the ground a very long time.
- Heritage homes. Repairs planned so the sandstone, the garden and the paving go back the way they were.
- Relining where digging is not an option. A new pipe inside the old one, without a trench through a heritage garden.
- Waterfront roofs. Flashings, valleys and gutters that take a beating from the weather.
- Bathrooms in period houses. New bathrooms with the waterproofing done properly behind the finishes.

In more detail
The three we get called about most
Old sewer under old houses
Hunters Hill has some of the oldest pipework we see. Earthenware and clay that has been in the ground since before anyone alive owned the house, and it does not fail politely.
We camera the line, locate the fault to the metre and tell you what shape the rest of it is in while we are down there. That is the only way to price a repair on a heritage property honestly.
Sewer repairsRelining instead of digging
On a sandstone block with a mature garden, a trench costs more to put back than the pipe costs to fix.
Relining puts a new pipe inside the old one through an existing access point, with no trench across the garden and nothing to reinstate. Where the pipe has collapsed outright we will say so and dig, because relining a broken pipe is not a repair.
Pipe reliningBathrooms in period houses
A new bathroom in an old house is mostly what happens behind the tiles. Old pipework, old falls and waterproofing that was never there to begin with.
We run the plumbing side start to finish, with the waterproofing done properly and certified, so the room lasts rather than just looking good on handover.
Bathroom renovationsIt’s an emergency! I’d better ring STS.
Old fashioned service. Modern day plumbing.

How we work with you
What happens from the first phone call
-
You get in touch
Ring the office, send the form or email us. For anything urgent, ring — we will tell you what it usually means and what to do while we are on the way, like where your water meter is.
-
We come and look
For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it properly first, and there is no charge for that visit. Guessing at a price over the phone helps nobody.
-
You get the price in writing
The job priced, not an hourly rate ticking over. If there is more than one sensible way to do it, you get both options and the difference between them explained.
-
We do the work
Our own licenced plumbers, on the day we said. Drop sheets down, the mess taken away, and a phone call rather than silence if we are running behind.
-
You see what we found
Photos, camera footage where we used it, and a plain explanation of what was actually wrong. If something is not right afterwards, ring us and we come back and put it right at our cost.
A job we did here
Hot water replaced in a Hunters Hill sandstone bungalow
The problem
A homeowner on Vernon Street lost hot water overnight. The house is a 1930s sandstone bungalow, the electric storage tank had corroded through, and they had family staying.
What we did
We got there the same day and confirmed the tank was past repair. The old pipework and a narrow side path made a straight swap awkward, so we sourced a tank that matched the output but ran more efficiently, and rerouted a short section of pipe to improve the drainage and make the next replacement easier to get at.
The result
Installed that afternoon and hot water back by dinner. The old tank went with us, the site was left clean, and the owner got a straight answer on how to get the most life out of the new one.

The work we have actually done in Hunters Hill
Our job records run from 2016. Since then we have completed 32 jobs in Hunters Hill.
That is the figure out of our job management system, not a number we made up for the website. It is also why we can usually tell you on the phone what a problem probably is before anyone gets in a ute.
The most common of them
- 18 sewer and stormwater repairs
- 16 blocked drains cleared
- 9 taps, toilets and everyday repairs
- 6 roofing and guttering
Plenty of jobs cover more than one of these, so the numbers overlap rather than add up.
About the suburb
Plumbing in Hunters Hill
Hunters Hill, postcode 2110, is the peninsula between the Lane Cove River and the Parramatta River, and one of the oldest suburbs in Sydney. The sandstone houses along Alexandra Street, Woolwich Road and Mary Street date from the 1850s onwards, with Federation and interwar homes on the streets off them, a small run of shops on Ryde Road and near Ferry Street, and the whole suburb under heritage rules that shape how any work gets done.
Old houses have old plumbing, and in Hunters Hill some of it is very old. Original earthenware sewers with roots in every joint, galvanised or even lead water services, and cast iron stacks in the two-storey homes. Poor pressure to an upstairs bathroom, brown water after a day away, and a drain that blocks every few months are the usual signs. We replace the water service in copper from the meter, and for the drain we camera it, jet it and reline where the pipe is sound so the garden and the sandstone paving stay where they are.
Working in a heritage house means working carefully. Sandstone walls, original floorboards, plaster ceilings and gardens that have been there a century all have to be left as we found them. We plan the route before we start, keep the holes to the ones that are needed, and put things back properly.
The blocks run down to the water on both sides of the peninsula, and the sewer lines run a long way downhill to the main, often through rock. A break can be a fair way from the house. Finding it with the camera before anyone digs matters more here than almost anywhere else we work. Stormwater off a big slate roof in a storm has to be got away properly, and the box gutters and downpipes on these houses are often original.
A lot of Hunters Hill houses have been extended or had bathrooms and kitchens added over the years, sometimes more than once, and where a drain was tied in badly is usually where the trouble is now. We find those joins and fix them.

Bridget Knox, Google reviewQuestions we get asked in Hunters Hill
What does a plumber in Hunters Hill cost?
It depends on the job, which is why we price the job rather than run an hourly rate. For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it first, at no charge, and you get the price in writing before we start.
Are your plumbers licenced and insured?
Yes. STS Plumbing Co Pty Ltd holds NSW licence 227192C and carries insurance, and the blokes who turn up are our own team, not subcontracted labour.
How quickly can you get here?
Our office is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and we call back within 24 hours, guaranteed. For anything urgent, ring rather than fill in the form and we will tell you what it usually means and when we can be there.
Do you work on units and commercial buildings?
Yes. A good share of our work is strata and commercial across the North Shore, and it comes with photos and a written finding a building manager or committee can act on.
Will you damage the sandstone or the garden?
Not if we can help it. On a heritage property we plan the job around keeping the paving, the stonework and the planting where they are, and relining exists precisely so a garden does not have to come up. Where we do have to dig, putting the ground back the way we found it is part of the price, not an extra.
Do you warrant your work?
Yes. If something is not right after we have left, ring us and we will come back and put it right at our cost. That is part of the STS Guarantee above.
