Upper North Shore

Plumber in Killara

Blocked drains, sewer repairs, hot water and roofing across Killara, where big gardens, tall trees and long sewer runs are part of almost every job.

What we get called out to in Killara

  • Long sewer lines. Big blocks mean a long run from the house to the main, and more joints for roots to find.
  • Tall trees. Roots in sewer and stormwater lines, found on camera before anything is dug.
  • Federation and interwar houses. Original pipework and hot water systems due for replacement.
  • Apartments near the station. Strata plumbing and common drains.
  • Gutters and roofs. Leaves and large roofs mean gutters that need regular attention.

Killara is part of our regular Upper North Shore run.

What we do here

In more detail

The three we get called about most

Long sewer runs

Big blocks mean a long line from the house to the main, and every extra metre is more joints for a root to find. Killara drains rarely block near the house.

We camera the whole run rather than clearing the first blockage we hit, because on a line this long there is usually more than one thing going on. You get the footage and the depth readings.

Sewer repairs

Hot water

Large houses, several bathrooms and a tank that was sized for the place as it was built. It usually gets found out on a cold morning with the house full.

We size the replacement for the house you actually have now. Gas, electric and heat pump, repaired where a repair makes sense, replaced where it does not, with the old unit taken away.

Hot water

Big roofs and gutters

Tall trees over a big tile roof means gutters and valleys that fill every autumn, and a box gutter that overflows inside rather than outside.

We clear and repair gutters, valleys, flashings and downpipes, and trace a roof leak back to what is actually causing it. Guard fitted where it will genuinely save you the trouble.

Roofing and gutters

It’s an emergency! I’d better ring STS.

How we work with you

What happens from the first phone call

  1. You get in touch

Ring the office, send the form or email us. For anything urgent, ring — we will tell you what it usually means and what to do while we are on the way, like where your water meter is.

  2. We come and look

For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it properly first, and there is no charge for that visit. Guessing at a price over the phone helps nobody.

  3. You get the price in writing

The job priced, not an hourly rate ticking over. If there is more than one sensible way to do it, you get both options and the difference between them explained.

  4. We do the work

Our own licenced plumbers, on the day we said. Drop sheets down, the mess taken away, and a phone call rather than silence if we are running behind.

  5. You see what we found

Photos, camera footage where we used it, and a plain explanation of what was actually wrong. If something is not right afterwards, ring us and we come back and put it right at our cost.

A job we did here

Pipework replaced in a Killara heritage home

The problem

A homeowner on Springdale Road had poor water pressure through the whole house, a few small leaks that kept appearing in different places, and rusty water first thing in the morning. They also wanted a better hot water system without touching the character of the house.

What we did

We inspected the lines and tested the flow, and found the original galvanised pipework was corroding from the inside, which explained the pressure, the rust and the leaks all at once. We replaced the corroded runs in modern pipe, put in a new gas hot water system, changed over the tapware while keeping the period fittings that mattered to them, and improved the stormwater drainage around the house.

The result

Pressure and water quality back to what they should be, one system instead of a string of patch repairs, and the character of the house untouched. All done to the current standards and signed off.

The work we have actually done in Killara

Our job records run from 2016. Since then we have completed 79 jobs in Killara.

That is the figure out of our job management system, not a number we made up for the website. It is also why we can usually tell you on the phone what a problem probably is before anyone gets in a ute.

We are at your service, est. 2007

The most common of them

  • 36 taps, toilets and everyday repairs
  • 32 blocked drains cleared
  • 28 sewer and stormwater repairs
  • 10 roofing and guttering
  • 6 hot water repairs and replacements

Plenty of jobs cover more than one of these, so the numbers overlap rather than add up.

About the suburb

Plumbing in Killara

Killara, postcode 2071, is on the Upper North Shore between Lindfield and Gordon, with the Pacific Highway and the railway running through the middle. It's a suburb of big Federation and interwar houses on big blocks, with tree-lined streets running east towards the golf course and Middle Harbour and west towards the Lane Cove River. There are newer apartment buildings near the station and along the highway, and a small run of shops.

The houses are the story of the plumbing. A Killara home from the 1910s or 20s has an earthenware sewer with roots in the joints, a galvanised water service that has narrowed inside, and long pipe runs across a large block to the main. Most blocked drains we clear in Killara are roots from the street trees and the old gardens, and clearing them only buys time. We camera the line, jet it and reline it so the roots stay out and the garden stays intact.

Poor pressure is the other common call. A galvanised service that's rusted to half its bore can't feed two bathrooms and a garden at once, and the sign is a shower that goes cold when a tap is turned on elsewhere. We replace the service from the meter in copper, and we check the main stop tap, which in these houses is often seized.

Big blocks mean big gardens, and a lot of Killara houses have irrigation, outdoor taps, pool plumbing and a granny flat or studio at the back. Where those were tied into the drains badly is usually where the trouble starts. We find those joins with the camera and fix them, and we do new plumbing for an extension or a flat properly from the start.

The apartment buildings near the station share their sewer stacks, stormwater and hot water between all the units, and a fault in one place affects every floor. That's strata work, and we do it with the strata manager in the loop, with camera footage and a written finding the committee can act on. Storms come through hard on the ridge, and gutters and downpipes on the older houses are often original. Roof plumbing is part of what we do.

Killara is part of our regular Upper North Shore run. STS has been based in Lane Cove since 2016, a short run up the highway. Ring us for anything urgent, or ask us to come and look at a bigger job. There's no charge for the site visit.

Questions we get asked in Killara

What does a plumber in Killara cost?

It depends on the job, which is why we price the job rather than run an hourly rate. For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it first, at no charge, and you get the price in writing before we start.

Are your plumbers licenced and insured?

Yes. STS Plumbing Co Pty Ltd holds NSW licence 227192C and carries insurance, and the blokes who turn up are our own team, not subcontracted labour.

How quickly can you get here?

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and we call back within 24 hours, guaranteed. For anything urgent, ring rather than fill in the form and we will tell you what it usually means and when we can be there.

Do you work on units and commercial buildings?

Yes. A good share of our work is strata and commercial across the North Shore, and it comes with photos and a written finding a building manager or committee can act on.

My water comes out rusty in the morning. What causes that?

Usually old galvanised pipe corroding from the inside, which is still in plenty of Killara houses. It shows up as rusty water after the pipes have sat overnight, and it comes with dropping pressure. Patching it one leak at a time gets expensive. Replacing the affected runs fixes all of it at once.

Do you warrant your work?

Yes. If something is not right after we have left, ring us and we will come back and put it right at our cost. That is part of the STS Guarantee above.
