Lower North Shore

Plumber in Wollstonecraft

Blocked drains, sewer repairs, strata work and roofing across Wollstonecraft, where apartment blocks and Federation houses share steep sandstone streets.

What we get called out to in Wollstonecraft

  • Apartment blocks. Shared stacks and common drains, with photos and a report for the strata manager.
  • Steep streets and sandstone. Sewer and stormwater lines that are hard to reach and need looking at before they are priced.
  • Federation houses. Original sewer lines and roots in the joints.
  • Leaks between floors. Traced to the source in the unit above and fixed.
  • Harbour weather on roofs. Flashings and gutters worn by the salt air.

Wollstonecraft is a few minutes from Crows Nest, where we were based from 2010 to 2016.

What we do here

In more detail

The three we get called about most

Apartment blocks

Wollstonecraft has a lot of blocks that are decades into the life of their original stacks. Slow drains, smells and water appearing a floor down all trace back to the same pipework.

We find which line the fault is on before anything is pulled apart, then hand back photos and a written finding the strata manager can act on. Fixed price, agreed before we start.

Strata plumbing

Sewer on steep sandstone

Steep streets and rock underneath change what a sewer repair costs, and you cannot tell from the footpath which one you are looking at.

We camera the line and locate the fault to the metre first. Where there is a landscaped garden or paving over the top, relining usually saves more in reinstatement than it costs.

Sewer repairs

Leaks between floors

Water coming through a ceiling from the unit above, and almost never from the spot it appears. Opening ceilings to go looking is how a small leak becomes an expensive one.

We locate it properly, repair it once, and give you the cause in writing, which is what an owners corporation needs before it can approve anything.

Finding leaks

It’s an emergency! I’d better ring STS.

Old fashioned service. Modern day plumbing.

How we work with you

What happens from the first phone call

  1. You get in touch

Ring the office, send the form or email us. For anything urgent, ring — we will tell you what it usually means and what to do while we are on the way, like where your water meter is.

  2. We come and look

For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it properly first, and there is no charge for that visit. Guessing at a price over the phone helps nobody.

  3. You get the price in writing

The job priced, not an hourly rate ticking over. If there is more than one sensible way to do it, you get both options and the difference between them explained.

  4. We do the work

Our own licenced plumbers, on the day we said. Drop sheets down, the mess taken away, and a phone call rather than silence if we are running behind.

  5. You see what we found

Photos, camera footage where we used it, and a plain explanation of what was actually wrong. If something is not right afterwards, ring us and we come back and put it right at our cost.

A job we did here

A collapsed terracotta line under a Wollstonecraft garden

Drain camera image showing a damaged section of sewer pipe

The problem

A homeowner on Shirley Road had sewer smells around the house and toilets backing up regularly. A previous plumber had cleared the line each time, and each time it came back within a few months.

What we did

We ran a full camera inspection instead of clearing it again, and found a collapsed section of terracotta pipe where roots had got in and broken it apart. Clearing a collapsed pipe will never hold. We put the footage together as a report and recommended relining the damaged section rather than trenching through the landscaped garden.

The result

The line was relined inside a day, with no excavation and nothing to reinstate. The smells and the backups stopped with the repair, because for the first time the actual cause was dealt with.

The work we have actually done in Wollstonecraft

Our job records run from 2016. Since then we have completed 506 jobs in Wollstonecraft.

That is the figure out of our job management system, not a number we made up for the website. It is also why we can usually tell you on the phone what a problem probably is before anyone gets in a ute.

We are at your service, est. 2007

The most common of them

  • 270 taps, toilets and everyday repairs
  • 90 blocked drains cleared
  • 73 hot water repairs and replacements
  • 73 sewer and stormwater repairs
  • 27 roofing and guttering

Plenty of jobs cover more than one of these, so the numbers overlap rather than add up.

About the suburb

Plumbing in Wollstonecraft

Wollstonecraft, postcode 2065, sits between Crows Nest and the harbour, with the station at the top and Berry Island at the bottom. The streets around Shirley Road, Rocklands Road and Brennan Park are mostly Federation houses and interwar flats, and there are newer apartment buildings near the station and along the Pacific Highway end.

The houses are old enough that the original plumbing is now the problem. Earthenware sewer lines with roots in every joint, galvanised water services that have rusted inside, and stormwater that was never properly connected. A drain that blocks every few months in Wollstonecraft is nearly always roots, and the fix is the camera to find the entry point, jetting to clear it, and relining so the roots stay out.

The interwar flat blocks share their stacks and their drains, and the older ones were built with earthenware and galvanised pipe throughout. A blockage on a shared stack shows up in the lowest flat first, and the fix has to be done with the strata manager and the owners informed. We give them the camera footage and a written finding, which is what a committee needs to approve the work.

It's a steep suburb, and the harbourside end gets the full weight of a southerly. Gutters and downpipes on the older houses are often original, and a blocked or undersized box gutter finds its way into a ceiling. Roof plumbing is part of what we do, and it's cheaper to replace a gutter than to repaint a ceiling twice.

Wollstonecraft is a few minutes from Crows Nest, where STS was based from 2010 to 2016, and not much further from Lane Cove, where we are now. Ring us for anything urgent. For anything bigger we'll come and look first, and there's no charge for that visit.

I wish I'd called STS Plumbing sooner. They were prompt, professional, and fixed a long-term problem without tearing up my backyard. Highly recommend.

Questions we get asked in Wollstonecraft

What does a plumber in Wollstonecraft cost?

It depends on the job, which is why we price the job rather than run an hourly rate. For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it first, at no charge, and you get the price in writing before we start.

Are your plumbers licenced and insured?

Yes. STS Plumbing Co Pty Ltd holds NSW licence 227192C and carries insurance, and the blokes who turn up are our own team, not subcontracted labour.

How quickly can you get here?

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and we call back within 24 hours, guaranteed. For anything urgent, ring rather than fill in the form and we will tell you what it usually means and when we can be there.

Do you work on units and commercial buildings?

Yes. A good share of our work is strata and commercial across the North Shore, and it comes with photos and a written finding a building manager or committee can act on.

My drain has been cleared three times and keeps blocking. Why?

Because clearing a blockage is not repairing a pipe. If a joint has opened up or a section has collapsed, roots and debris will find it again within months no matter how well it is jetted. A camera run tells you which of the two you have, and it is worth doing before you pay for a fourth clear.

Do you warrant your work?

Yes. If something is not right after we have left, ring us and we will come back and put it right at our cost. That is part of the STS Guarantee above.
