Plumber in Forestville

Blocked drains, sewer repairs, hot water and roofing across Forestville, where family homes back onto bushland and most blocks have a slope to deal with.

What we get called out to in Forestville

  • Sloping blocks. Stormwater that has nowhere to go ends up under the house. We sort out where it should run.
  • Bushland edges. Roots from native trees in sewer and stormwater lines.
  • 1960s and 70s houses. Original pipework and hot water systems that are now well past their life.
  • Bathroom renovations. Family bathrooms brought up to date, with the waterproofing done properly.
  • Gutters and downpipes. Leaves from the bush fill gutters fast, and overflowing gutters cause leaks inside.

Forestville is at the far edge of our patch, and still a local job for us.

What we do here

In more detail

The three we get called about most

Stormwater on sloping blocks

Most of Forestville sits on a slope, and a lot of the houses were built before anyone thought hard about where the water would go in a downpour.

Water under the house, through the garage or pooling against a wall is almost always a stormwater problem, not a leak. We work out where it should be running and put in the pits, ag lines and drainage to send it there.

Drainage and stormwater

Blocked drains

Backing onto bushland means native tree roots in sewer and stormwater lines, and they find the joints in older pipework quickly.

We jet the line and camera it so you can see what caused it. Where the pipe is sound that is the whole job. Where a joint or a section has gone, relining usually saves digging a trench across the yard.

Blocked drains

Gutters and downpipes

Leaves from the bush fill a gutter faster here than almost anywhere else we work, and an overflowing gutter is one of the most common causes of a leak inside the house.

We clear them, repair the rusted sections, fit guard where it is worth fitting, and make sure the downpipes are actually connected to something. Valleys and flashings checked while we are up there.

Roofing and gutters

It’s an emergency! I’d better ring STS.

How we work with you

What happens from the first phone call

  1. You get in touch

Ring the office, send the form or email us. For anything urgent, ring — we will tell you what it usually means and what to do while we are on the way, like where your water meter is.

  2. We come and look

For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it properly first, and there is no charge for that visit. Guessing at a price over the phone helps nobody.

  3. You get the price in writing

The job priced, not an hourly rate ticking over. If there is more than one sensible way to do it, you get both options and the difference between them explained.

  4. We do the work

Our own licenced plumbers, on the day we said. Drop sheets down, the mess taken away, and a phone call rather than silence if we are running behind.

  5. You see what we found

Photos, camera footage where we used it, and a plain explanation of what was actually wrong. If something is not right afterwards, ring us and we come back and put it right at our cost.

A job we did here

A Forestville kitchen drain that kept backing up

An old drain pipe dug up with tree roots wrapped through it

The problem

A Forestville homeowner had slow water in the kitchen sink and a smell coming back up it. She was worried about what the water was doing under the house while it sat there.

What we did

We put the camera down the line and found a solid root intrusion through the joints of the old drainage pipe, which is common where the gardens back onto bush. We went through the options with her and relined the affected section rather than excavating the yard.

The result

Full flow back the same day, the roots shut out at the joint, and no trench through an established garden. She knew the price before we started and it did not move.

About the suburb

Plumbing in Forestville

Forestville, postcode 2087, sits on the ridge between Middle Harbour and Garigal National Park, with Warringah Road running along the top and the shops at Forestway in the middle. It's mostly brick houses from the 1950s, 60s and 70s on good-sized blocks, with some newer homes and townhouses, and the streets around Kitchener Park and Forestville Park back onto bush.

Houses of that age have plumbing that's now fifty or sixty years old. The sewers are earthenware or early PVC, the water services are often galvanised or the first copper, and the hot water system has usually been replaced at least once. Roots are the big one. With bush on three sides and big gum trees in the gardens, a blocked drain in Forestville is nearly always roots in the joints of the old sewer, and clearing it only lasts until next spring. We camera it, jet it and reline it so the roots stay out.

The blocks slope, and the stormwater has a long way to go. On the streets that fall away towards Middle Harbour and Bantry Bay, a heavy storm sends water off the roof, down the drive and into whatever's at the bottom. Gutters and downpipes on the older houses are often original, and a blocked or undersized gutter finds its way into a ceiling. Roof plumbing and stormwater drainage are part of what we do.

A lot of Forestville houses have been extended, had a second bathroom added, or had a granny flat put in the back yard. Where a drain was tied in badly twenty years ago is usually where the trouble is now. We find those joins with the camera and fix them properly, and we do the new plumbing for an extension or a flat from the ground up.

The shops at Forestway and along Warringah Road ring us for the things that stop trade: a blocked grease trap, a dead hot water unit, a toilet that won't stop running. We plan those jobs around the business.

Forestville is at the edge of our patch and still a local job for us. STS has been based in Lane Cove since 2016, and it's a straight run out along the Eastern Valley Way. Ring us for anything urgent, or ask us to come and look at a bigger job. There's no charge for the site visit.

Questions we get asked in Forestville

What does a plumber in Forestville cost?

It depends on the job, which is why we price the job rather than run an hourly rate. For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it first, at no charge, and you get the price in writing before we start.

Are your plumbers licenced and insured?

Yes. STS Plumbing Co Pty Ltd holds NSW licence 227192C and carries insurance, and the blokes who turn up are our own team, not subcontracted labour.

How quickly can you get here?

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and we call back within 24 hours, guaranteed. For anything urgent, ring rather than fill in the form and we will tell you what it usually means and when we can be there.

Do you work on units and commercial buildings?

Yes. A good share of our work is strata and commercial across the North Shore, and it comes with photos and a written finding a building manager or committee can act on.

Water runs under my house when it rains. Is that a plumbing job?

Usually yes. It is nearly always stormwater going somewhere it should not, either because a pit is full, a line is blocked or there was never a proper drain there to begin with. We look at where the water comes from before quoting anything, because the fix depends entirely on that.

Do you warrant your work?

Yes. If something is not right after we have left, ring us and we will come back and put it right at our cost. That is part of the STS Guarantee above.
