Hunters Hill and the river

Plumber in Gladesville

Blocked drains, sewer repairs, hot water and roofing across Gladesville, from the Federation houses near the river to the new apartments along Victoria Road.

What we get called out to in Gladesville

  • Original sewer lines. Older houses on clay pipe, with roots in the joints.
  • New apartment buildings. Strata plumbing, hot water plant and common drains.
  • Sloping streets down to the river. Stormwater and sewer lines that need the fall checked, not just cleared.
  • Shops and businesses. Commercial repairs around trading hours.
  • Hot water and gas. Repairs, replacements and new appliances by licenced gas fitters.

Gladesville is just over the river from our part of the North Shore.

What we do here

In more detail

The three we get called about most

Leaks you cannot see

A water bill that has jumped, a stain on a ceiling, or a meter still turning with every tap in the house shut off. On a two storey house the water can travel a long way from the actual leak.

We locate it before anything gets opened up. That is the difference between one patch to repair and a room to put back together.

Burst pipes and leaks

Blocked drains

The older Federation houses near the river are still on clay sewer, and the streets running down the hill mean lines with a long fall and plenty of joints.

We jet the line, camera it, and check the fall while we are in there. A drain that blocks over and over is often a fall problem rather than a roots problem, and clearing it forever will not fix that.

Blocked drains

Hot water and gas

Storage tanks, continuous flow and heat pumps, repaired or replaced, in houses and in the newer apartments along Victoria Road.

Gas work is done by our own licenced gas fitters, whether it is a cooktop, a leak you can smell or a certificate a building needs. We will tell you honestly whether a unit is worth repairing before you spend anything on it.

Hot water

It’s an emergency! I’d better ring STS.

Old fashioned service. Modern day plumbing.

How we work with you

What happens from the first phone call

  1. You get in touch

Ring the office, send the form or email us. For anything urgent, ring — we will tell you what it usually means and what to do while we are on the way, like where your water meter is.

  2. We come and look

For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it properly first, and there is no charge for that visit. Guessing at a price over the phone helps nobody.

  3. You get the price in writing

The job priced, not an hourly rate ticking over. If there is more than one sensible way to do it, you get both options and the difference between them explained.

  4. We do the work

Our own licenced plumbers, on the day we said. Drop sheets down, the mess taken away, and a phone call rather than silence if we are running behind.

  5. You see what we found

Photos, camera footage where we used it, and a plain explanation of what was actually wrong. If something is not right afterwards, ring us and we come back and put it right at our cost.

A job we did here

A concealed leak above a renovated Gladesville ceiling

A leaking pipe found above a ceiling

The problem

A couple in a two storey brick house near Massey Street found water stains spreading across their living room ceiling. The house had just been renovated, and the new flooring and walls were directly under it.

What we did

We came the same day and used acoustic leak detection and moisture mapping to trace it to a concealed burst pipe in an upstairs bathroom wall. The renovation had reused old pipework that had corroded. We opened the one wall section, replaced the damaged run in modern pipe, resealed it, and picked up a waterproofing problem in the bathroom that would have caused the same trouble again.

The result

Sorted inside a day, before the leak got into the new floor. They knew the price before we started and they have the photos of what was behind the wall.

The work we have actually done in Gladesville

Our job records run from 2016. Since then we have completed 28 jobs in Gladesville.

That is the figure out of our job management system, not a number we made up for the website. It is also why we can usually tell you on the phone what a problem probably is before anyone gets in a ute.

We are at your service, est. 2007

The most common of them

  • 9 sewer and stormwater repairs
  • 8 blocked drains cleared
  • 5 taps, toilets and everyday repairs
  • 3 roofing and guttering
  • 2 hot water repairs and replacements

Plenty of jobs cover more than one of these, so the numbers overlap rather than add up.

About the suburb

Plumbing in Gladesville

Gladesville, postcode 2111, is just over the Lane Cove River from us, running from Victoria Road down to the Parramatta River at Glades Bay and Tennyson Point. It's a suburb of Federation and interwar houses on streets like Westminster Road and Joubert Street, weatherboard cottages near Victoria Road, postwar brick homes towards Ryde, and newer apartment buildings along Wharf Road and Victoria Road.

The older houses have the plumbing of their age. Earthenware sewers with roots in the joints, galvanised water services that have rusted inside, and stormwater that runs wherever it was left to. Roots are the reason most Gladesville drains block, especially around Monash Park, along the Glades Bay foreshore and near Buffalo Creek Reserve where the trees are big and old. We clear the line, put the camera down to see where the roots are getting in, and reline the pipe so they can't get back.

Galvanised water services show up as poor pressure, a shower that goes cold when a tap is turned on elsewhere, and brown water after a day away. We replace the service from the meter in new copper, and we check the main stop tap while we're there, because in these houses it's often seized.

The apartment buildings along Wharf Road and Victoria Road share their sewer stacks, stormwater and hot water between all the units. A blockage or a leak on a shared stack is a strata job, and we do it with the strata manager in the loop, with camera footage and a written finding the committee can act on.

The businesses along Victoria Road and around the Gladesville shops ring us for a blocked drain at opening time, a hot water unit that's given up, or a tap that won't shut off. We plan those jobs around the business. Down towards the water, houses on the streets that fall to Glades Bay and Tennyson Point have long sewer runs and stormwater that has to be got away properly, and we camera before anyone digs.

Gladesville is a few minutes from Lane Cove, where STS has been based since 2016, straight over the Fig Tree Bridge. Ring us for anything urgent, or ask us to come and look at a bigger job. There's no charge for the site visit.

Questions we get asked in Gladesville

What does a plumber in Gladesville cost?

It depends on the job, which is why we price the job rather than run an hourly rate. For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it first, at no charge, and you get the price in writing before we start.

Are your plumbers licenced and insured?

Yes. STS Plumbing Co Pty Ltd holds NSW licence 227192C and carries insurance, and the blokes who turn up are our own team, not subcontracted labour.

How quickly can you get here?

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and we call back within 24 hours, guaranteed. For anything urgent, ring rather than fill in the form and we will tell you what it usually means and when we can be there.

Do you work on units and commercial buildings?

Yes. A good share of our work is strata and commercial across the North Shore, and it comes with photos and a written finding a building manager or committee can act on.

My water bill has jumped and I cannot see a leak. What now?

Shut every tap and appliance in the house and go and look at the water meter. If the dial is still turning, water is going somewhere. Ring us with that and we will come and find it, which is a lot cheaper than waiting for it to show up through a ceiling.

Do you warrant your work?

Yes. If something is not right after we have left, ring us and we will come back and put it right at our cost. That is part of the STS Guarantee above.
