Plumbing hints and tips

When tree roots attack: the hidden threat to your sewer line

There are few things more frustrating for a homeowner than a blocked or overflowing sewer line. But what happens when the problem sits deeper than expected, hidden below the surface and tangled up with nature itself?

That is exactly what STS Plumbing and Ben Nolan Plumbing Services found on a recent job. What began as a routine blocked drain call-out turned into a full excavation, and a reminder of just how destructive tree roots can be to underground pipes.

Here is what happened, how roots wreck sewer lines, and what every Sydney homeowner should know to protect their property and their wallet.

The unexpected discovery

The job started like many others. A client on the North Shore had ongoing drainage problems: gurgling toilets, slow drains and a bad smell. All the signs of a blocked sewer line.

A CCTV inspection quickly showed an obstruction in the sewer line. But this was not grease or a simple collapsed pipe.

Once the line was dug up, the cause was clear. The pipe had been crushed by an enormous, tangled mass of tree roots. They had grown straight through the old pipe, wrapped around it and squeezed it until it cracked and finally collapsed.

It was one of the worst cases of root damage the team had seen.

Why tree roots are a plumber's worst enemy

Roots go looking for water and nutrients, and a sewer pipe is full of both. If there is even a hairline crack or a loose joint in an ageing pipe, roots will find their way in.

Once inside they grow fast. As they expand they crack the pipe further, catch everything that goes past and eventually block it completely. Left alone, that leads to:

  • Collapsed pipes
  • Sewage backing up into the house or garden
  • Water damage
  • Expensive excavation and replacement

Many homes in older Sydney suburbs are still on their original earthenware or clay pipes. Those are especially vulnerable, because of their joints and because they crack with age.

What made this job different

This was not a few roots poking through a joint. Solid stumps had formed around the pipe, growing over it, under it and right around it. Part of the root mass looked more like a cut tree trunk than something growing underground.

The team excavated carefully, removed the roots and replaced the damaged section with modern, durable pipe, taking care to protect the surrounding area. The site was then put back the way it was, with no sign of the surgery that had just happened underneath.

How to stop it happening to you

Not every case is this extreme, but root intrusion is one of the most common causes of sewer problems in Sydney. A few ways to cut the risk:

1. Know where your sewer line runs

Before planting trees, find out where the sewer and stormwater lines are. Keep deep-rooted species away from them, or use root barriers.

2. Have the drains inspected

A CCTV drain inspection catches root intrusion early, before it becomes a costly repair.

3. Watch for the early signs

Slow drains, bad smells, gurgling, or a patch of lawn that is greener than the rest can all point to trouble below.

4. Replace ageing pipework

If the house is still on clay or old PVC, pipe relining or replacing the line can be a smart investment.

5. Act early

The sooner a blockage is dealt with, the more options you have and the lower the cost. Waiting is how a small job becomes an emergency dig like this one.
