Mosman and the harbour side

Plumber in Neutral Bay

Blocked drains, leaks, hot water and strata work across Neutral Bay, from the older walk-ups and terraces to the shops on Military Road.

What we get called out to in Neutral Bay

  • Older unit blocks. Shared stacks and common drains that have been in service for decades.
  • Leaks between floors. Water through a ceiling, traced to the unit above and fixed at the source.
  • Terraces and semis. Shared sewer lines and tight access, planned before the day.
  • Shops on Military Road. Commercial repairs booked around trading hours.
  • Harbour weather on roofs. Flashings, gutters and valleys that salt air wears out first.

Neutral Bay sits between Crows Nest and Mosman, the two suburbs STS was based in before Lane Cove.

What we do here

In more detail

The three we get called about most

Older unit blocks

Neutral Bay has a lot of walk-ups and flats that are decades into the life of their original shared stacks. Slow drains, smells and water turning up one floor down are all the same story.

We find which line the problem is on before anything is pulled apart, and the finding goes to the strata manager with photos. Fixed price, agreed before we start.

Strata plumbing

Leaks between floors

Water through a ceiling from the unit above is the most common call we get in this suburb, and where it appears is usually not where it is coming from.

We locate the source properly rather than opening the nearest ceiling. That is the difference between one repair and two, and the report is written so an owners corporation can act on it.

Finding leaks

Blocked drains

In the terraces and semis it is shared sewer lines and roots. In the flats it is grease and rubbish in a stack. Both end up as somebody's slow drain.

We jet it, camera it and tell you the actual cause, so the same line does not block again in six months. You get the footage, not just our word for it.

It’s an emergency! I’d better ring STS.

How we work with you

What happens from the first phone call

  1. You get in touch

Ring the office, send the form or email us. For anything urgent, ring — we will tell you what it usually means and what to do while we are on the way, like where your water meter is.

  2. We come and look

For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it properly first, and there is no charge for that visit. Guessing at a price over the phone helps nobody.

  3. You get the price in writing

The job priced, not an hourly rate ticking over. If there is more than one sensible way to do it, you get both options and the difference between them explained.

  4. We do the work

Our own licenced plumbers, on the day we said. Drop sheets down, the mess taken away, and a phone call rather than silence if we are running behind.

  5. You see what we found

Photos, camera footage where we used it, and a plain explanation of what was actually wrong. If something is not right afterwards, ring us and we come back and put it right at our cost.

A job we did here

A kitchen sink leak in Neutral Bay caught early

Under a kitchen sink with the pipework visible

The problem

A Neutral Bay homeowner opened the cupboard under the kitchen sink and found water sitting in the bottom of it. It had been getting into the cabinetry and was working its way towards the flooring.

What we did

We came out and found a failed pipe joint under the sink rather than anything in the wall, which is the good version of that phone call. We repaired it properly, checked the rest of the connections under there while we had it apart, and dried the cabinet out.

The result

A small repair because it was caught early. Had it run another few weeks it would have been the cabinetry and the floor as well, and that is a different job entirely.

Not a claim, a count

The work we have actually done in Neutral Bay

Our job records run from 2016. Since then we have completed 383 jobs in Neutral Bay.

That is the figure out of our job management system, not a number we made up for the website. It is also why we can usually tell you on the phone what a problem probably is before anyone gets in a ute.

We are at your service, est. 2007

The most common of them

  • 192 taps, toilets and everyday repairs
  • 83 blocked drains cleared
  • 72 sewer and stormwater repairs
  • 54 hot water repairs and replacements
  • 44 roofing and guttering

Plenty of jobs cover more than one of these, so the numbers overlap rather than add up.

About the suburb

Plumbing in Neutral Bay

Neutral Bay, postcode 2089, runs from the Military Road shops down to the ferry wharf, with Ben Boyd Road and the streets off it in between. It's a suburb of art deco and interwar flat blocks, Federation houses and a growing number of newer apartments, all on streets that fall steeply towards the harbour.

The flats are the bulk of the work. A 1930s block on Military Road or Ben Boyd Road shares a sewer stack, a stormwater line and often a single hot water plant between a dozen or more units, and all of it was built in earthenware and galvanised pipe. When the stack blocks, the ground floor flat finds out first. We work with the strata manager, camera the stack, and put the finding in writing with photos so the committee can approve a reline or a replacement without a second visit.

The houses are Federation and interwar, and the drains are the same age as the flats. Roots in the earthenware joints are the usual cause of a blocked drain, and the fix is the same: clear it, see it with the camera, reline it. Galvanised water services in these houses are often the reason a shower goes cold when a tap is turned on elsewhere.

Military Road is one of the busiest shopping strips on the North Shore, and a cafe or restaurant with a blocked drain or a dead hot water unit can't wait. We know that, and we plan commercial jobs so they're done between services rather than during one.

Neutral Bay sits between Crows Nest and Mosman, the two suburbs STS was based in before Lane Cove, so we've been working in these streets since 2007. Ring us for anything urgent. For anything bigger we'll come and look first, and there's no charge for that visit.

What our customers say

I called STS to fix a faulty cistern. David fixed the problem quickly by replacing the inlet valve, but every now and then the problem would come back. Finally called STS after 6 months, David again came, fitted a new valve under warranty. No fuss, no questions, no cost. Excellent customer service.

Questions we get asked in Neutral Bay

What does a plumber in Neutral Bay cost?

It depends on the job, which is why we price the job rather than run an hourly rate. For anything bigger than a straightforward repair we come and look at it first, at no charge, and you get the price in writing before we start.

Are your plumbers licenced and insured?

Yes. STS Plumbing Co Pty Ltd holds NSW licence 227192C and carries insurance, and the blokes who turn up are our own team, not subcontracted labour.

How quickly can you get here?

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and we call back within 24 hours, guaranteed. For anything urgent, ring rather than fill in the form and we will tell you what it usually means and when we can be there.

Do you work on units and commercial buildings?

Yes. A good share of our work is strata and commercial across the North Shore, and it comes with photos and a written finding a building manager or committee can act on.

There is water in the cupboard under my sink. Is that urgent?

Deal with it this week rather than this month. A slow joint under a sink is a cheap repair while it is only wetting the cabinet, and an expensive one once it has got into the floor and the wall behind. Turn the stop taps under the sink off in the meantime.

Do you warrant your work?

Yes. If something is not right after we have left, ring us and we will come back and put it right at our cost. That is part of the STS Guarantee above.
